The winner of the 2026 Ballon d'Or will be named at a ceremony in London less than 24 hours from now.
Three players are the primary contenders for the award: Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane. The prize recognizes the best footballer of the 2025-26 season. The event will take place at the London Palladium.
French data firm Avisia released artificial intelligence predictions that place Yamal as the statistical favorite. The model assigns the Barcelona winger a 23 percent probability of winning. Harry Kane follows closely with a 21 percent chance. Kylian Mbappe and Rodri are tied for third at 19 percent each. Lionel Messi holds the fifth spot with an 18 percent likelihood. Avisia stated that its model correctly identified the top five candidates for the 2025 award, which Ousmane Dembele won.
Bookmakers offer a different view of the odds. They list Kane as the outright favorite with approximately 70 percent probability. This split in prediction methods creates a distinct divide in how the race is being analyzed.
Players and coaches have voiced their support for specific candidates. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone argued that Lionel Messi deserves the award. "After the World Cup, he played at his age… No doubt about it," Simeone said. Former Italy international Marco Materazzi agreed, noting that Messi is in a different league at 38 years old despite respect for Yamal.
Jude Bellingham backed his England captain, Harry Kane. Bellingham described Kane as an honest and hard-working person who works hard for the team. He stated that it is definitely possible for Kane to win the prize. Anthony Gordon, an England international and Barcelona teammate of Yamal, sided with the younger Spaniard. Gordon called the level of play shown by Yamal at his age ridiculous and on another level entirely.
Kylian Mbappe has received support from his Real Madrid teammate Aurelien Tchouameni. Tchouameni described the Frenchman as having an incredible season. The players themselves have also campaigned for their own chances, with Yamal and Mbappe publicly endorsing themselves, while Kane has remained relatively quiet.
Individual statistics favor Mbappe and Kane over Yamal. Mbappe leads La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15 goals. He also won the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup and set a new record for most World Cup goals with 12. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total by any player since Lionel Messi netted 82 in 2011-12.
Yamal's case relies on team success rather than personal scoring records. He won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona. Injuries interrupted his personal campaign, but he secured major trophies. Mbappe and Kane did not win major titles with their clubs or national teams. Mbappe failed to win a trophy with Real Madrid or France, while Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but finished third with England at the World Cup.
Historical trends suggest that winning a major tournament is often required for the award. Only four of the previous 19 Ballon d'Or winners did not lift the Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America during their winning year. Yamal is positioned to become the youngest winner in history if he receives the vote, surpassing the record set by Brazilian Ronaldo in 1997 at age 21.
